Positive response to the Tube exhibition gives further impetus The Tube taking place every two years always gives an impression of the atmosphere prevailing in the international tube and steel processing branch. The response that RSA noticed in about 500 discussions during the exhibition is positive without exception. “In particular the European steel producers as well as the further processors meanwhile found excellent ways and means to make themselves stand out through quality against the cut-price imports from the Far East”, Dipl.-Ing. Rainer Schmidt, business manager of RSA Entgrat- und Trenn-Systeme, reports. If the focus is on machines for the pre-production, RSA is playing a decisive part. The company is a manufacturer of sawing centers for sawing, deburring, facing and chamfering, checking, cleaning and stacking of various workpiece geometries and nearly all kinds of steel qualities and alloys. According to the company, 70 out of every 100 purchase orders for sawing centers are placed in favour of an RSA sawing center. According to the customers, this is mainly due to the optimum service in the first place, followed by a high production output as a result of short ancillary times. According to the customers, the third most important advantage is the long lifetime of the machines due to a robust construction and the modular expandability. “Our analysis on how customers can gain competitive advantages is logically leading to the competitive advantages of our products”, Rainer Schmidt comments on the feedback of the customers. Visitors to the exhibition respond extremely positively to the new developed sawing center An example of the progress in the field of the cutting technology through high performance circular saws is the new development of the RASACUT XXL, RSA presented at the Tube exhibition for the first time to a wide public. The remarks of the visitors to the exhibition give an impression of the advantages the new saw is offering to customers: “It’s really fast”. “The saw even copes with solid bars up to 170 mm diameter!”. “I’ve never seen before such a good cut surface”. “Sawing, deburring, and cleaning in one operation process is exactly what we require”. These representative reactions are not surprising. The output performance of the new RASACUT XXL is 10 times higher than the output of band saws which are normally used for this diameter range. Here are some examples. Round tube with 121 mm diameter, 11 mm wall thickness, material S355 and a fixed length of 560 mm: Output 327 pieces per hour including ancillary times.A second example: Square tube, material S235, dimensions 110 x 100 mm, wall thickness 4 mm and a fixed length of 127 mm: Output 514 pieces per hour including ancillary times. A third example: Solid bar, material 42CrMo4, with a diameter of 130 mm and a fixed length of 11,5 mm: Output 201 pieces per hour including ancillary times. RSA expects 2008 to even surpass the previous record year “The new developed sawing center RASACUT XXL will help the pre-producers to open up new methods for the sawing of solid bars not only with regard to output, but also to the cut quality. For example, forging blanks can be cut exactly to the gram”, Rainer Schmidt reports. “In this way we open up new market niches for our company, and as a result our positive development will increase further.“ For the second time in succession, RSA was able to achieve a growth in annual turnover in double figures to more than 20 million Euros in 2007. According to the company, also the first quarter 2008 has started very well – with regard to the invoiced turnover as well as the significant increase in receipt of orders. “Due to the fact that there was a smooth transition of development from the record year to the first quarter 2008, we are confident to realise our ambitious turnover planning even this year. Turnover will grow again in double figures”, the head of the company RSA describes the planned targets of his company for the current year. The foreign demand is increasing further since RSA takes an active part in developing the market, and the domestic demand is stable on a high level. The new developed sawing center RASACUT XXL that was presented at the Tube exhibition for the first time, will open up new chances for the pre-production of tubes and solid bars up to 170 mm diameter. Dipl.-Ing. Rainer Schmidt sees the upturn of his company continuing and signals further product developments. www.rsa.de

The Handtmann HBZ AeroCell, first horizontal machining centre for the specialist for 5-axis HSC machining centers is predestined for the machining of structural parts made of aluminium. The trend to increasing chip removal rates requires a solution with optimal chip flow: During the horizontal machining the chips fall immediately down on the ground and can be removed efficiently out of the machining room. The Aerocell was developed together with Asco and was consequently trimmed to power. Equipped with the presently most powerful spindle on the market – 110 kW – highest chip removal rates in shortest time are achieved. In one minute, 12,8 litres of the material are chipped from the raw part - which is equivalent to 35 kg solid aluminium. Besides that, speeds up to 80 m/min in all linear axis and accelerations up to 0,7G guarantee economic machining, highest performance and shortest cycle times. So far the loading and unloading for the horizontal machining was very often a problem. Handtmann act on the suggestion from the market and developed therefore a unique solution. Due to the palette changing system, which is integrated into the machine, the work pieces can be set up easily, ergonomically and with minimal required space in the horizontal position – parallel to the machining cycle.During the last machining steps in the machining room, both rugged arms of the palette changing system lead the second palette with the raw part back-to-back to the first palette that also closes the working room. After the machining process, the first palette is unlocked and pivoted from the machining room. With a turn of both palettes, the palette with the raw material is positioned and locked safely to the machine. During the machining of the material on the second palette, the first palette with the machined part is brought in the loading- and unloading position and can conveniently be set up and loaded with another raw part.At ALUMINIUM in Essen, Handtmann will be represented in Hall 4, stand B06 and will give more information about the new and innovative horizontal machining centre HBZ AeroCell. www.handtmann.de

Measuring fixtures cannot always be assembled exclusively from standard components. When complicated part geometry and/or special contact situations are involved custom-built workpiece adaptations are needed. Usually Witte Bleckede, manufacturer of modular fixturing system Alufix, supplies such custom-built components conventionally milled. In order to speed up manufacture of special parts Witte is taking advantage of rapid prototyping possibilities and utilizing RapidFit from Materialise. Pre-design of fixtures using standard components as far as the contact points takes place with Witte design software "Alufix Expert” then RapidFit takes care of the custom-built part supports. The geometry for the supports is calculated via Alufix Expert data. They are then materialised by laser sinter technology from a powdered basic material (thermoplastics) layer by layer. Arbitrary three-dimensional geometry can be produced, which often cannot be manufactured by conventional mechanical manufacturing processes. Thus even extremely complicated contour parts are available within a short time. If part changes occur only the special laser-sintered parts need be exchanged, and they are redesigned, supplied and mounted very quickly. www.horst-witte.de

In order to satisfy the increasing demand for a simple, economical and at the same time modular fixturing system, Witte Bleckede has developed a new product: Aluquick.Patented Aluquick unites the advantages of simple extruded profiles with the long established hole grid technology of Witte fixturing classic Alufix. Aluquick goes far beyond the advantages of conventional extruded profiles, because users can mount and position individual components both infinitely in grooves and repeatably in grid. Assembly is simplified and additionally speeded up with the help of new connection technology. Aluquick profiles, which are compatible with Alufix Classic and other Witte systems, are available in grid sizes 40 and 50mm. The grid on all sides offers almost unlimited design possibilities. The variety of configurations is backed up by different types of column and strut versions, which are available up to a length of six meters. A further advantage of Aluquick is weight savings of up to 40 per cent compared with Alufix fixtures which are already lighter and easier to handle than conventional fixtures. Depending on user application Aluquick is available as sets of modular components or as a complete fixture. The grid base plates are manufactured up to sizes of 10 x 2.5 meters. Set items are anodized black making Aluquick suitable for both CMM and non-contact (so called white-light) measuring applications. www.horst-witte.de

The ALUMINIUM Team visited the EUROGUSS show in Nuremberg. It was a good experience to get an impression of the actual innovations in this sector. We had interesting conversations with companies who already confirmed their participation at the ALUMINIUM 2008 and informed them about the current status. In addition we introduced the show concept to companies who have aluminium in their product range. The Foundry Pavilion as well as the casting segment within ALUMINIUM 2008 was of great interest during our conversations. By the way: the traditional Nürnberger sausages tasted very well. Best regards Jessica
